NOSE Starts out really sweet with notes of vanilla frosting, cane sugar, and butterscotch. As it breathes wisps of lemon and tropical fruits start to emerge and if you throw in a bit of water buttery caramel explodes. Being a peated malt there is a nice smokiness to the whole thing.
PALATE First taste was of smoky anise like a smoked black licorice. That was quickly followed up with a symphony of flavors that ran the gamut of sweet and savory. Flavors like black coffee, buttered & sugared wheat toast, candied malt, creamy orange, tropical fruit, all tied together with a steady peaty underpinning. Being one of the most intensely flavorful and complex whiskies I’ve had in a while it seems like I pick out something new every time I drink it.
FINISH Starts out with burly dark fruit that morphs into earthy leather before dissolving into soft green apple and coriander. A little dry, but only enough to make you want a second glass before reaching for the water.
I'll admit it... I'm a bit enamored with this whisky, it hits me just right.
