An Evening with Ed Kohl and Signatory Vintage

Wow! What a night. At this past meeting, we were graced with the presence of Ed Kohl, Signatory's marketing manager for North America -- he's the dude who chooses what casks will be bottled for the USA. Even those of us who thought we knew our stuff received major schooling from Ed. Learning exactly how Signatory obtains their casks was a surprise -- nope, you don't just get to stroll through distilleries' warehouses and pick your favorites. In fact, it's downright complicated. Good thing we get to enjoy the benefits! Among the 8 Signatory single malt Scotches we sampled (plus Ed's special-recipe vatted pure malt, Hogshead - very tasty and a great buy), the clear favorite was a 1979 Dallas Dhu, followed closely by a 1991 Glen Elgin, a 1981 Brora, and a 1991 Mannochmore from a South African sherry butt. It's fair to say that we were all extremely impressed, and we'll all be worshipping at the Signatory altar on an even more frequent basis. Thanks Ed!
