After tasting this quite a bit over a long period of time, I've grown to like it more.  It's a very tame number, with mainly big fruits and floral stuff going on.  The finish is too woody and eventually hurts the return glass.  But I do enjoy it.  B-/B  See old review below for how my tastes seem to have changed (Or did it change that much in the open bottle?  To note, I am rather obsessive about using Private Preserve in all of my whiskies.)

[Old Notes] Mr. McEwan, I'm not sure I understand what you were going for here.  I mean it's not bad.  It's just not that good.  Very straightforward, with a very mild sweetness and woodyness.  A dry, bitter finish.  Not a lot to say about this one, there's just not much going on.  Puzzling.  C+

Per my previous recollection I thought Mr. Herz was being harsh although I was never truly blown away.  On a re-taste, I thought the nose has a nice wood-in-a-damp-cellar air to it.  Unfortunately Mr. Herz was correct elsewhere.  This malt was weak and fleeting. There was an interesting sweet to bitter transition with a hint of what the nose covered, but the whole experience lasted one second and reminded me of scotch watered down to 20%.  Why this is highly rated I don't know.  Perhaps the other reviewers like weak scotch.  Drop any digit from the price and you'll have what I think it's worth.

N:  Violets, glue, acetone, a little smoke.
P:  Big transformation from beginning to end of palate.  Nuts and earthy notes.   Light.
F:  Chocolate, dry oak.

Seems a bit unbalanced.

Fuji

Mostly green apples, paraffin wax and chalk on the nose and palate with licorice and citrus peel to the finish.
