Nose:  Great nose on this with lots of spicy rye notes including anise and clove.
Palate:  There's an overwhelming sourness to the palate which subsumes the other flavors.  Adding water reduces it somewhat and some of the rye comes out along with chocolate notes.
Finish:  Rye spice returns.

The nose and finish are fabulous but the sourness of the palate is problematic.

N: Moderately spicy, some corn sweetness with a vegetal note. Grainy bed to it all, some slight caramel/toffee generic sweetness with (no joke) a hint of Dr. Pepper. Fennel an cinnamon, maybe a touch of nutmeg.

P: Light on the palate. Corn sweetness, new-make sourness (but just a hint). Toffee, slight earthiness, vanilla. Building heat.

F: Finishes warm, brings some of the vanilla notes with a hint of cherry behind it. Some wood but not a lot. Relatively short finish. Kind of chewy.

I feel like I've had this bourbon a thousand times. It's adequate to decent. It's nothing special.

A nice a strong bourbon that doesn't have a lot to say. Hard for me to love it, but I can't hate it either -- I hae a major weakness for just about any high-strength bourbon of moderate age.
