Claret Wood Finish,  5036 Bottles, New Line in 2011

This seems to be brand new as of May 2011.  Very little info on this and no idea what distillery it comes from.  Although it does originate in Scotland so when it says "Single Malt" I assume they speak the truth.

The parent company appears to be The Highland Queen Whisky Company which also used to own the Majesty line of malts (appears to have been sold off recently).  This was recently found at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa/Newport Beach for $60.  - Dave

A very interesting (but not all that special) malt.  The nose changes every few minutes from very weak sharp wine notes to a warm malty sourness to something of a clean and fresh obviously finished sweetness.  The color also clearly suggests a finish (as does the label)

The palate is nothing harsh - weak at 40%.  A warm malty background gives way to the wine (not obviously a claret - but certainly a wine).  This was likely a pretty weak batch that needed some kick.  The wine adds it but this might have been much better at a higher strength.

Very easy drinking and something sweet for an after-dinner with cookies kinda experience.  At $60 for a 21 year old, this clearly wasn't something they were holding on to for value......B-/C+  Age makes it a B-

Nose is winey, sweet tobacco.

Palate is unusual, rather sweet and honeyed caramel, with an overall wine note that I can't place. Seems like it came from a strange cask [I was tasting this blind]. Pomegranate. Curry in the finish with a hint of mint. At first I found this a little "off," but I warmed up to it and enjoyed it well enough.

Oh okay, Claret finish. That makes sense. And 21 years old. And 40%… yeah, kinda odd tasting, but harmless and fine.
